This kit was mainly designed to serve as an up-inverter that charges a 12V battery from a 6V solar panel. It also provides the necessary isolation to prevent the battery being discharged by the solar panel in low light conditions and during the night. The power rating of a solar panel is usually given for higher than normal battery voltages. Even taking into account the inverter's efficiency of around 90%, in most cases this overall combination would deliver more power into a battery than an equivalent 4W-12V solar panel which charges the battery directly.
